“This whimsical picture book encourages young readers to consider whether they really want to encounter a monkey in the wild and provides details about the geographical and physical realities (some monkeys pee on strangers, for instance) that may dampen nascent biologists' initial enthusiasm. The fast-paced narrative guides readers through a rain forest, weaving in facts about various monkey habitats and behaviors. Detailed, quirky digital illustrations enhance the appeal, and the exaggerated expressions on the main character’s face aptly mirror probable audience reactions (for example, wide-eyed shock at the prolonged, loud screech of a howler-monkey call). This engaging and original take on a perennially popular subject will be a welcome addition to school and public library collections, especially when paired with factual guides featuring photographs in natural settings. ”—Kathleen McBroom

School Library Journal,
February 2015

“An attractive picture book guide to animals. Charmingly bold illustrations paired with enticing text share the basic facts about these creatures. A young explorer meets these different species in person and narrates her exploits for the benefit of readers. She dons her gear and kayaks through marshland to spy on nesting swans, boats through Northern Australian waterways to see a crocodile, and puts on night-vision goggles and takes a hike to glimpse the shy nocturnal platypus. The language is simple but engaging (“There’s one! He’s diving. He must be hungry.”) and will add to the feeling of adventure. This solid combination of text and illustration will inspire readers to do some exploring of their own. VERDICT Those seeking animal titles should consider incorporating these into their collections. ”—Nancy Call

School Library Connection,
September 2015

“Readers follow a curious child in each title as he or she is given advice about meeting the title animal. Embedded in the narrative are facts about the animals, their habitats, and habits. Illustrations are colorful, but somewhat stylized. Some vocabulary may be beyond first graders, but a glossary clarifies their meanings. Each title includes a world map showing the animal’s range, including separate indications for specific species mentioned. Websites. Additional Selection. ”—Bonnie Benkard

“Lots of kids learn about fascinating creatures and want to meet them in person, and though that may not always be the best idea, the titles in the Do You Really Want to Meet...? series explain the best way to find creatures in the wild, even in the face of real challenges, while offering some additional facts about each featured creature. Cape Buffalo introduces the gigantic horned animal and sensibly advises not getting too close, since the cape buffalo is one of the most hunted African animals and very wary of humans. Elephant sends its kid explorer to Sri Lanka to find an Indian elephant in the wild and ends at an elephant sanctuary, where the traveler can meet a docile pachyderm safely. Kangaroo explains that the marsupials are easy to find in Australia—they even live in cities!—but despite their cute appearance, their razor-sharp claws and powerful kicks make them dangerous to approach in the wild. Only the most daring kid would want to meet a great white, but Shark tells them how: cage diving. Fabbri’s impressionistic paintings don’t shy away from the more gruesome aspects of life in the wild, but the cartoon kid explorers and friendly tone of the narrative are a good counterbalance. Animal-obsessed little ones will likely find these books both informative and wanderlust inducing. ”—Sarah Hunter

The Horn Book,
July 1, 2016

“After a brief introduction to the smallest and largest shark species, Do You Really Want to Meet a Shark? follows an inquisitive girl on a cage-diving expedition to meet a great white. Author Cari Meister’s second-person text and Daniele Fabbri’s bold cartoon illustrations add immediacy to the experience. Peppered with facts, warnings, and questions, the text focuses mainly on the dangers of interacting with sharks rather than their habitat, diet, and behaviors.”—Out of the Box

School Library Journal,
November 2016

“One of the few informational series to incorporate the use of illustrations instead of photographs into the narrative, the style of which matches the text well. The titles follow a pattern of a child going off to “meet” or see a particular animal in the wild, learning more about their behavior and habitats along the way, and answering the question of why one may or may not want to meet one of these wild creatures. This structure makes the series well suited to share with a group. There is a nice mix of subjects, from orcas to badgers, camels to owls. VERDICT Because of its uncommon format (for series nonfiction), this is a pleasant addition to animal collections for the very young. ”—Series Made Simple
