READING LEVEL: GRADE 1 AND UP
Series Made Simple – School Library Journal,
November 2016

“Young cat lovers will find plenty of information here to keep them interested. Each title highlights a different breed of cat. There is enough detail to satisfy cat-enthusiasts, but plenty of introductory information for the general browser. There are facts to help readers identify similarities and differences among cat breeds, as well as information about personality and care/dietary requirements. VERDICT Large fonts, plain backgrounds, and lots of big, colorful photographs make these a good choice for most libraries. ”

“Grades 1-3 - The Favorite Cat Breeds series (6 new titles) introduces early readers to a variety of cat breeds, presenting each group’s defining characteristics through a series of cute and colorful spreads. Each title highlights nine tidbits on the breed in question, touching on its distinguishing physical traits, personality, and behavior. Additionally—and necessarily—each entry includes a section on kittens, as well as the breed’s strengths as a pet. Devon Rex Cats traces these felines’ roots back to Devon, England, and features their uniquely fragile fur. “Like a Wild Cat?” insets compare the domesticated cats to their big, wild cousins, and back matter includes a visual guide to identifying the breed, plus a glossary and further reading. These being written to support early readers, details are lacking, but that’s part of the charm, with the design, layout, and information all befitting an easygoing experience, meant for browsing by young cat lovers or those considering a pet of their own. For those untroubled by the ethics of animal breeding—here not addressed—this makes for a cozy choice, with cat pics aplenty. ”—Booklist
