Children's Literature - The Life of Clara Barton,
January 2022

“The basics of Clara Barton’s life are laid out for a younger audience. Along with details about where she was born and raised, we learn that she started out as a teacher and created New Jersey’s first public free school, what her first nursing experience was, why she was not allowed to teach in the very school she founded, and other work-related sex-based discrimination she experienced. Her nursing experience from the Civil War through her Red Cross years is explained, as are other causes and activities she was involved in, how she managed to get the American Red Cross founded, and her efforts to train people in first aid. Many aspects of this book will appeal to younger readers. The text is accessible for both reluctant and emerging readers. The layout balances text and illustrations well. Bright colors attract readers’ attention. Key words are highlighted in blue in the text and defined in the glossary. Special features include a table of contents, a glossary, a “Read More” section (bibliography), websites of interest, and an index. Many historical photos and a progressive historical timeline also enhance the reading experience. In addition to being a good resource for students interested in biographies, stories of famous women, or accounts of Civil War figures, this book could also be used as a supplementary material for social studies classes. This would also be a good choice to pair and/or compare and contrast with Mary Pope Osborne’s Civil War on Sunday from the "Magic Tree House" series. Recommended for purchase by school and public libraries serving elementary-aged students and looking to enhance their biography selection. ”—Tricia Finch

Children's Literature - The Life of Rosa Parks,
January 2022

“Olson's book is a beautiful way to help children learn about an iconic woman in history. This book is a children's biography on one of the most influential women in the civil rights movement, Rosa Parks. It chronicles her birth until her death going into detail the different important parts of her life. It also talks about how these different parts of her life influenced her decision to be a civil rights activist. There is more information in the book than in a typical school textbook. It also has real-life pictures for the illustrations which bring such depth to the information and to the history that was being made. This book can spark a child's interest in volunteering and being an activist. It also brings more information about the time of the civil rights movement that may not be learned before reading it. A must for any library! ”—Lisa Jacovsky

Children's Literature - The Life of Dolores Huerta,
January 2022

“The subject of this biography is one of the most inspiring women in history, albeit one who is seldom included in the History curriculum. The book shares the life and accomplishments of Huerta, whose contributions to society were recognized when she was given the Congressional Gold Medal of Honor by President Barack Obama. Growing up, Huerta faced many challenges. As she grew, she saw the need for equal pay for farmers, which led her to start two unions to ensure they were paid well and equally. This book looks at her advocacy and her accomplishments in equal rights in a way that any child can understand. The use of photographs make this inspirational book even more powerful. Includes a list of resources for additional information, as well as information about the foundation she started to teach others to become leaders in their community. A powerful and inspiring biography! ”—Lisa Jacovsky
