“A barnyard of adorable creatures awaits young readers in the Spot Baby Farm Animals series, which promotes early literacy skills under the guise of ultra-huggable photographs. As is typical in the Spot books, an opening page introduces four words with matching photos for youngsters to look for as they move through each title. These volumes highlight physical features of their respective animals over five double-page spreads, with the final two pages offering a concluding informational tidbit and an answer key for the seek-and-find challenge. In Calves, readers will discover that a baby bovine only has bottom teeth and that its strong tongue helps it pull up grass to eat. The fluffy yellow star of Ducklings bobs in water, each webbed foot ready to paddle, and, later, waits for flight feathers to grow on its tiny wings. In Lambs, woolly babies race about on strong legs and snag plants with their unique split upper lip. Baby goats gambol through Kids, which zooms in on their small sturdy horns and the rectangular pupils of their eyes. Repetitive phrases (“Look at the . . .”) join new, simple sentences in a colored text box on each spread, which also boasts a crisp, heart-melting photo of a baby animal. Information is deliberately kept light in these supportive beginning readers, which are cute, to boot!”—Julia Smith
