School Library Journal – Series Made Simple,
April 2019

“Vivid photographs and basic text introduce five insects plus one arachnid. Two or three sentences per page highlight a single feature, usually starting with an imperative: ‘Look at her stinger. It is sharp. Only a female can sting.’ Photographs provide well-chosen visual examples of the topic, ranging from the eye of a walking stick to a dragonfly’s jaw as it eats a cricket. Some show the animal in its environment, while others are set against white space. The use of multiple species conveys a sense of the variety of types within each group. There is some potential for confusion, but it should be clear to most readers that while one featured moth has spots on its wings that ‘look like eyes,’ the fact does not apply to all species. VERDICT Good choices for new readers who like bugs.”—Steve Engelfried
